The U.S. has criticized Israel for approving settlement expansion directly after the UN recognised Palestine as a non-member observer state. Washington says its a step back for peace talks. 3-thousand new settler homes have been given the go ahead in the West Bank and East Jerusalem less than 24 hours after the UN vote. Israel has accused the Palestinians of seeking unilateral recognition and not a solution through talks.

The Palestinians in turn demand that all settlement building is stopped before negotiations resume. 138 states voted to upgrade Palestine's status, with 9, including the U.S. voting against and 41 abstaining. Political analyst Phyllis Bennis says the Palestinians could now take action against Israel through global institutions.

PALESTINE: ONE STATE, TWO STATES OR EVEN THREE STATES? VIDEO

Palestinians have lived under Israeli occupation for more than 60 years. Their homes and land have been stolen and their status reduced to that of refugees in their own country. But instead of uniting against a common enemy, Palestinians are divided, between the Islamists in Hamas who rule Gaza, and the Palestinian Authority (PA) that governs the West Bank. Many accuse the PA of being Israeli stooges and their mismanagement of everything from unemployment, sky-rocketing prices, water rights, taxation and border issues have made them deeply unpopular.

Postponing elections simply prolongs the crisis. The paradox is that Ramallah, the unofficial capital of the occupied territories, is booming, with aid money pouring in to assuage the world's guilty consciences. Many worry that this is breeding an aid-dependent culture and further weakening Palestinian resistance. And what hope is there of any permanent solution? Will the Palestinians continue to live in limbo, in one state, two states, or even three states?

NABI SALEH, PALESTINE PROTEST ENDS IN CLASHES WITH ISRAELI FORCES VIDEO

Protest against the occupation, An Nabi Salih, West Bank, 2 Dec 2011

Dozens participated in this week's demonstration in Nabi Saleh against the theft of its lands and spring by the Halamish Israeli settlement and the Israeli occupation that sustains it. Nabi Saleh residents, other Palestinians, and international and Israeli supporters marched peacefully from the center of the village.

This time the procession headed directly towards the hilltop overlooking Nabi Saleh's spring. The approaching protesters caused settlers who were there to run back to Halamish, but the procession was stopped by Israeli soldiers. At this point Israeli forces also raided the village and besieged the protesters, taking over rooftops and shooting tear gas canisters directly at people: unarmed or peaceful demonstrators and residents of the village. However, some people managed to evade the army and place rocks on its way out. Clashes between soldiers and stone throwers erupted, and after a while, the army managed to take control of the main junction. By then it rushed outside the village.

Protesters then burned tyres and placed rocks on the main road to prevent the army from raiding the village again. During the raid two Palestinian journalists were arrested and taken by the Israeli army: Majd Mohammed from AP and Mohammed Razi from the Palestinian Television. Clashes then erupted beyond the burning tires line. Soldiers advanced on foot and shoot volleys of tear gas canisters by a cannon installed on a jeep. At this phase Israeli forces also used extensively their "screem" machine, which produces a deafening alarm sound.
